Dear Keeper,

It’s the last day of the year and I’ve been thinking about how much sharing it will take for there to be more good days than there are bad. I’ve been trying really hard not to have bad days, but today Alex said that sometimes people just feel bad for absolutely no reason at all. Sometimes they feel like just to exist is the most difficult thing they have to do. I don’t think people who struggle to exist want to die. I just think they don’t know how to share.

I drove to Green Leaf today and I waited in my truck until Alex had finished work. Before I left my house, I scribbled thank you on a piece of paper and folded it. When she came outside, I called out to her and she looked up at the sound of her name. She smiled when I found my way across the road to her. Snow was falling and it caught in her hair the way my breath catches in my throat every time I see her.

“What are you doing here?”

I handed her the note.

“What’s this?”

“A letter,” I said, although it seemed obvious.

When she opened it she looked up at me.

“Why are you thanking me?”

“Because lately you’ve made most of my bad days, good.”

She folded the paper and put it in her pocket. Then she reached for my coat and pulled me towards her.

“Has anyone thanked you lately?”

“What for?”

She whispered, “Existing,” before her lips were on mine and I could feel how cold the tip of her nose was but it didn’t matter because everything about Alex reminds me that even if existing is hard sometimes, there are some things worth existing for.

I haven’t been able to say this in a long time, but I’m okay. I hope you’re okay too.
